Navigating Recent Passport Changes for Travelers with Gender Marker 'X'

Gender Marker X passport, 2025.

At TrovaTrip, we believe that every Traveler and Host deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported—exactly as they are. We know that recent updates regarding passport regulations in the United States may be unsettling, especially for those with an “X” gender marker on their passports. If you’re feeling uncertain or frustrated, please know that you’re not alone—we’re here to support you and navigate these changes together.

We’ve outlined some frequently asked questions below. Because this policy is actively evolving, we strongly encourage you to check official government sources for the most up-to-date information.

Why have passports with gender marker “X” been suspended?

A recent executive order issued by the President states that the U.S. government will recognize only two sexes, male and female. As a result, the Secretary of State has temporarily paused the issuance of passports with the “X” gender marker. This means that new applications and those currently in process for passports with an “X” marker will be impacted by this suspension.

What if I already have a passport with the “X” marker?

If you already have a valid passport with the “X” marker, you can still use it for travel. The current suspension only applies to new applications or those still in process. While the State Department has not issued formal changes to existing documents, we recommend staying informed in case further updates arise.

Will this affect international travel?

Not all countries recognize the “X” gender marker, so it’s important to check with the embassy or foreign office of your destination before traveling to avoid any complications. To help with your travel planning, we’ve compiled resources and guides specifically for LGBTQ+ Travelers, which you can find on our blog.

Can I still re-enter the U.S. with an “X” marker passport?

Yes, at this time, all previously issued passports remain valid, including those with the “X” marker. However, given that policies may continue to change, we strongly encourage you to monitor updates from the U.S. State Department to stay informed.

You are not alone

At TrovaTrip, we value and respect every individual exactly as they are. We encourage all of our Hosts and Travelers to set their preferred pronouns in the Trova app so they’re visible to us and your fellow Travelers. While we may not have all the answers, we want you to know that we stand with you, we support you, and we’re committed to navigating this evolving landscape together.
