About This Trip

Embark on an anime-themed adventure in Japan, where the vibrant world of Japanese animation comes to life. Your journey begins in Tokyo, the heart of anime culture, which includes a visit to Akihabara, the electric town famed for its countless anime and manga shops. Here, you can dive into the world of your favorite characters, explore themed cafes, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of a cosplay event. From there, we will move to Kyoto, where we will visit the Higashiyama Area and partake in a traditional tea ceremony. We will then finish our Japan trip in Osaka with a delicious food tour. I look forward to traveling with you all soon! :)

Discover Tokyo’s past and present at both a peaceful shrine and a legendary fashion hotspot, then spend the evening experiencing some of Japan’s most exciting street food creations.

Meiji Shrine Visit

1 Hour

Connect with Japan’s heritage as you enter the nearly 40-foot high gate that leads into tranquil grounds dedicated to Emperor Meiji (1867-1912) and his wife. You’ll wash your hands in accordance with the Shinto ritual of cleansing, then observe the rituals and prayers that take place here.

Harajuku Visit

1 Hour

Explore the birthplace of Tokyo street style. Since the early 1980s, teens have come here to break free of conformity and express themselves through stunning colors and fashions. The shops and restaurants of Takeshita dori and the vintage treasures of Cat Street await!

Shinjuku Evening Street Food Tour

3 Hours

This evening you will explore the lively Shinjuku area on foot for a fascinating foodie adventure! Beginning either from your hotel or meeting spot pre-determined by your guide, you will join local crowds in this world-famous foodie’s paradise to hunt for iconic and unique local snacks that will fill up your dinner experience. Three stops will be made at various Japanese pubs and eateries where you will sample izakaya food such as Yakitori, Tempura, as well as some other surprising unique local treats that you normally would not encounter. The type of food items sampled during this tour will largely be meat-based with a few vegetable & seafood items. *Please note that Japanese cuisine frequently uses ingredients with animal products and/or gluten, therefore vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free diets CANNOT be accommodated.

Your adventure continues as you head west to Kyoto to explore the former capital of Japan, a picturesque district with narrow lanes, wooden buildings, and traditional architecture.

Bullet Train: Tokyo to Kyoto

This morning you will take the Shinkansen, bullet train, to Kyoto. Kyoto is nicknamed "the city of ten thousand shrines" and is where we'll stay for the next two nights.

Higashiyama Area Visit

1 Hour

Visit the 1,350-year-old Yasaka Shrine then walk Kyoto streets lined with beautifully restored shops before heading to Kiyomizu Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also known as the Pure Water Temple due to its 3 streams of fresh mountain water which are said to grant luck in love, success in studies, or long life. Just don’t drink from all 3 as that’s considered greedy!

Encompassing 5 blocks in the center of town, this lively retail market known as “Kyoto's Kitchen” specializes in all things culinary. With over 100 shops selling fresh seafood, vegetables, traditional sweets, and more, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

1 Hour

Witness a display of spirituality and skill–called Sao or Cha-no-yu–that has been passed down through the centuries. In this intimate ceremony, practitioners seek to bring harmony and inner peace to their guests by preparing tea with traditional equipment and serving it warm.

Train: Kyoto to Osaka

Today is an exciting day as you get ready to take the train from Kyoto to Osaka, which is also known as the Kitchen of Japan. Osaka is famous for its street food, and you are in for a culinary adventure. The train journey between these two cities is beautiful, with scenic views of the countryside.

Osaka Street Food Tour

1 Hour

Take a 20 minute public transit to embark on an enticing Osaka Street Food Tour, where your taste buds will be treated to the vibrant flavors of the city's bustling streets. The adventure begins in Shinsekai, a nostalgically retro downtown area, where you'll savor kushikatsu, delicious Japanese-style skewers that are a must-try local delicacy. From there, the journey takes you to the heart of Osaka's food scene, Dotonbori, to indulge in takoyaki, the iconic octopus balls that epitomize the city's street food culture. The tour ends with a sit-down farewell dinner, consisting of 8-9 courses that showcases the finest of Japanese cuisine, including a Wagyu Hot-pot, Chicken Sashimi, and Chicken Karaage, among other exquisite dishes. What does "or similar" mean next to the accommodations?

When we say “or similar,” it means the hotel listed is an example of what you can expect—not always the exact spot you'll be staying. Sometimes Operators adjust accommodations due to seasonal availability or group size. But rest assured: the quality and comfort will match what's shown.

Why would the accommodations change from time of booking?

Flexibility allows Operators to choose the best-fit accommodations closer to your trip—based on availability, logistics, and what works best for the group (like the number of Travelers and room configurations). This ensures a smooth experience without sacrificing comfort or quality.

Finalized hotel info is typically shared about 30 days before departure in your Traveler Portal, along with your final itinerary.

Who actually runs my trip, and how does Trova keep things safe?

Your trip is operated by licensed, certified Tour Operators who manage all trip logistics and safety—from accommodations and local Guides and day-to-day logistics. All trips comply with local legal and regulatory standards. We vet each Operating partner carefully so you can travel with confidence.

General Travel Questions

Do I need any documentation to travel?

It depends on where you're headed. Though it is not a universal requirement, many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. This ensures Travelers have sufficient time to return home even if their visas are extended or if unexpected circumstances arise. 

Some destinations may also require a visa. Check our visa page to consult your country's travel resources.

Do I need any vaccines?

It's always best to check with your healthcare provider or a travel doctor before your trip. You can also visit the CDC website (or your local government's travel health resource) for destination-specific vaccine guidance. Health and safety first!

Are flights included in the trip cost?

Because our Hosts and Travelers are coming from all around the world, flights to and from your destination are not included. Some trips include internal flights (like a short domestic hop), and those details will always be listed on the trip page if applicable.

Can you accommodate my dietary needs?

We’ll do our very best! Our Operators aim to accommodate dietary restrictions, though availability varies by destination. For example, some places offer plenty of vegan and vegetarian choices, while others might be quite limited. The earlier you let us know—through your trip form or by contacting our support team—the better we can prepare. Once you arrive, be sure to remind your local Guide about any allergies or restrictions so they can help you enjoy your meals safely and comfortably.
