Vermont, in the northeastern United States, is famous for its maple syrup, quintessential New England countryside, pastoral views and picturesque towns. Explore the downtown paths or villages by bicycle and experience a few of Vermont’s more than 100 iconic covered bridges, dating back to the early 1800s. Ski the famous slopes or hike the Long Trail, the nation’s oldest long-distance hiking trail, which meanders through the predominantly forested landscape over thousands of acres of the richly colored mountainside.

- Archaeologists think people have lived in the land we now call Vermont for about 13,000 years.
- Native American tribes including the Abenaki, the Mohican, the Pennacook, the Pocomtuc, and the Massachusett, have lived on the land; and members of the Abenaki tribe still live in Vermont today.
- Vermont’s name comes from two French words: vert, which means “green,” and mont, which means “mountain.”
- Vermont’s famous maple syrup is made from sap from the sugar maple, the state tree. Other common trees include yellow birch, pine, spruce, and cedar. The Green Mountain State is also known for its wildflowers, including wild bleeding heart, bulbous buttercup, pink fairies, and sweet white violet.
- Legend has it a lake monster named Champ lives in Lake Champlain, which sits on the border of Vermont and New York.
