Fun Facts

  • Berat is known as the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Its white Ottoman-era houses climb the hillside, creating the city’s distinctive wall of windows.
  • The Albanian language is unique in Europe. Albanian forms its own independent branch of the Indo-European language family rather than belonging to the Slavic, Romance, or Germanic groups.
  • Albania has one of Europe’s most unusual recent histories. During the communist era, hundreds of thousands of concrete bunkers were built across the country. Many can still be spotted throughout Albania today.
  • Livadhi Beach is one of Himarë’s longest beaches. It’s surrounded by mountains and olive groves, giving it a distinctly Mediterranean setting.
  • There are bunkers on the beach. Yes, actual Cold War military bunkers can still be found along Albania's coastline. Imagine ordering a beachside cocktail with a concrete military bunker sitting a few feet away.
  • The Albanian Riviera still has a strong village culture. Beyond the resort areas, traditional villages preserve stone houses, churches, family-run taverns, and agricultural traditions, giving the coast a very different feel from more heavily developed Mediterranean destinations.
  • Himarë has been around for more than 2,000 years. The area was inhabited by the ancient Chaonians, and archaeological evidence shows the settlement was fortified as early as the 5th-4th century BCE.
  • Berat's castle is older than the Ottoman Empire. The fortress, known as Kala, has origins dating back to the 4th century BCE, although much of what you see today was built or rebuilt later.
  • Albania has a river that disappears underground. The Vjosa River is one of Europe's last major free-flowing wild rivers, and parts of Albania's karst landscape also contain underground rivers and springs.
  • Albania has Mediterranean beaches AND snow-capped mountains. You can theoretically spend the morning swimming in the Ionian Sea and be looking at serious mountains in the same view. Not a bad commute.
