Mount Kilimanjaro with Krissy and Ben Hiking

Moshi - Mount Kilimanjaro

2021: Sep 25 - Oct 3

Grab your hiking boots and get ready for a high altitude adventure. This 9 day trek up the Machame Route of Mount Kilimanjaro will be difficult both mentally and physically. But it's called "The Rooftop of Africa" for a reason and the views from the top will make it all worth it. Are you up for the challenge of bagging one of the Seven Summits of the world?

TRIP DISCLAIMER: A high-level of fitness and prior hiking experience is required for joining this adventure. The trek gains more than 13,000 feet of elevation over 7 days in high-altitude conditions. TrovaTrip has hand-picked the 7-day Machame route as this gives trekkers longer on the mountain, and increases the success of summiting – even on this route nearly one out of three fail to reach the peak. If you are unsure if this trip is right for you, please consult with a doctor before booking.

Shortly after the tower you will come to the second junction which leads to the Arrow Glacier. Continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summiting.

Walking Time: 5-6 hrs

Habitat: Semi-desert

Overnight at Barranco Camp

Included: Breakfast, Trek Day 3, Lunch, Dinner

Elevation: 13,250 ft to 15,350 ft

Distance: 2 mi

Climbing Time: 3-4 hrs

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Overnight at Barafu Camp

Included: Breakfast, Trek Day 5, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), you will continue your way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You'll head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.

From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1 hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa! Snap some photos, celebrate with the group, and bask in the accomplishment you have just achieved.

From the summit you'll begin your descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. You'll arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy your last evening on the mountain.

Elevation: 15,350 ft to 19,340 ft

Down to 10,150 ft

Distance: 3 mi up / 8 mi down

Hiking Time: 5-7 hrs up / 5-6 hrs down

Day 8

After breakfast, you'll continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

Distance: 6 mi

Hiking Time: 3-4 hrs

Habitat: Forest

There will be a vehicle waiting for you at the Mweka gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi.

This evening, get together with your mountain crew one last time at the farewell dinner. Cheers to an incredible accomplishment and finally sleeping in a real bed!

Overnight in Moshi

Included: Breakfast, Trek Day 7, Farewell Dinner

Day 9

Until next time!

Included: Breakfast, Airport Transfer
